I have owned my VN800 for about 5 years and never had a problem that I didn't create myself. Your valves could become damaged if you never check the clearance/redo the shims on them. Or maybe you like to rev it up loud before the engine is warm. That would eventually bend a valve.The last would be to check the voltage on the regulator. Connect DC meter to Black/Yellow and White wires on the regulator connector. Idle should be 12v. At 6 - 8k rpm you should have 14-15volts. The alternator is in the crankcase and blow-by from the piston rings will pressurize the case if it can't vent.
